| Umetrics 20 years |

After 20 years in business, Umetrics is still going strong, and we see the future as full of exiting opportunities, with our powerful technology being used by more companies in a rapidly expanding range of applications.
20 Years ago Umetri AB was started by the four organic chemists / chemometricians Rolf Carlson, Åsa Nilsson, Conny Wikström, and Svante Wold, and soon thereafter Nouna Kettaneh-Wold joined the group. The business idea was to do consulting and training in DoE and MVA for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, primarily in Sweden. A major motivation for starting the company was to funnel routine consultations away from the academic department to a more suitable place, and may be even make some money in the process.
In the beginning only Åsa and Conny worked in the company, while the others helped from the sidelines. Pretty soon more people joined the company, and Åsa and Rolf left to pursue other opportunities. Around 1992 software development was started as a complement to the consulting and training business. After a few more years, the name was changed to Umetrics to recognize the growing international orientation of the company, and software development and sales became the major business area.
Today close to 60 people work in Umetrics, spread over offices in Sweden, the UK, and USA. The focus areas for Umetrics’ business are still the pharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing, but also the chemical, biotech, food and beverages, pulp and paper, semiconductor, and automotive industries are using Umetrics’ software and services.
Last year Umetrics was acquired by MKS Instruments (MKSI on NASDAQ), which gives Umetrics a stable platform to pursue exciting opportunities for the multivariate approach in new application areas and markets.
We all look forward to the next 20 years as the period when the use of our multivariate technology becomes widely and routinely used by everybody who needs to understand data for the purposes of improving her/his knowledge about systems and process of interest, and thereby allowing the improvement of the systems and processes themselves.
