Software and Application Discussions at UAS4

Three glorious days (April 20–22) in Victoria BC welcomed the participants in the 4th User Alliance Symposium. Umetrics' customers from a range of industries and disciplines discussed various applications and successful uses of Umetrics software. Discussions ranged from off-line data analysis in drug discovery to use of real-time monitoring software for fault detection and classification in chemical, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor industry.

Umetrics presentations included that of Nouna Kettaneh who lead a well received talk on the new features in SIMCA-P and SIMCA-P+ version 11. The release is planned for June 2005. The Report Writer, Workset Wizard and Analysis Advisor were welcomed as additions making our work-horse software even easier to use.

Users from both IBM and Novartis lead sessions with excellent keynote talks. IBM's long time experience in applying real-time fault detection solutions and Novartis' industry leading PAT (Process Analytical Technology) applications made interesting material and sparked spirited follow up discussions.

Prior to the start of the formal sessions on Thursday morning two tutorials were given on Wednesday afternoon. These tutorials brought some of the advanced features in SIMCA-P and SIMCA-P+ to the audience. The first tutorial's focus was on Spectral Preprocessing and the techniques that exist in SIMCA-P to allow efficient analysis of spectral data. The second discussed the application of batch process modeling and analysis in SIMCA-P+.

As is customary at Umetrics Alliance Symposiums awards were given out to recognize the efforts of particular individuals and companies for groundbreaking multivariate applications. This year the grand award went to IBM for their leading work in FDC applications. Tamara Adamson from IBM (pictured here on the right accepting the award from Umetrics' Nouna Kettaneh) received the award for outstanding efforts over a number of years of work. A great time was had by all. Excellent weather and location and excellent talks combined to generate a good camaraderie that was enjoyed from sun up to sun down. We thank all the participants in this event - especially the speakers and the planning team from Umetrics US - for their efforts making this event a success.

Umetrics continues to hold user conferences every 1.5 to 2 years and we look forward to meeting you again at the next event scheduled tentatively in London, UK.
